STEM it Up

Statement of Purpose

Independence Elementary School Science/Technology/engineering/Math Magnet is part of the LAUSD voluntary Court-ordered integration program and attempts to ameliorate the five harms of racial isolation:  Low Academic Achievement, Low Self Esteem, Lack of Access to Postsecondary Opportunities, Interracial Hostility and Intolerance, and Overcrowded Conditions.  To that end, students at Independence Elementary School Science/Technology/engineering/Math Magnet are provided with an enriched and a rigorous curriculum that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Ultimately, our goal is for the students to become lifelong learners who question, explore, and improve their immediate and global community.

Educational Philosophy

Vision

It is our vision that all students will succeed in all academic areas and become passionate life long learners.

Mission

It is our mission to create a community of learners that engage in a rigorous academic program emphasizing the content areas of Science, Technology, engineering, and Mathematics.

Beliefs

  • Students will be provided with an environment rich in opportunities to explore, expand, and apply their learning.
  • Students will be encouraged to think critically, solve problems, and debate ideas.
  • Students will be provided opportunities to collaborate, compete, and create in order to support their growth as 21st Century learners.
